Interesting tidbits about Led Zeppelin:

* Formed by Jimmy page as an off shoot of the Yardbirds. In fact their original name was "The New Yardbirds".

* The name Led Zeppelin was coined by the drummer Keith Moon of The Who, whom upon hearing of Jimmy Page's concept for the band, pessimistically predicted it would "go over like a lead zeppelin".

* Jimmy Page was already quite rich and successful as a top call studio musician when the band was formed, whereas everyone else (Robert Plant, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones) were relatively broke and unknown. This didn't stop Jimmy Page from making everyone split the cost for beer and pizza at the first rehearsal.

* Jimmy Page's famous double-neck Gibson SG was custom made for him so he could play all of the important guitar parts to "Stairway to Heaven" live. Here is an interesting article about his guitars/etc (thanks for the link J.J.).

* John Bonham lined the inside of his Kick (bass) drum with tin foil in order to make it more...well...just more.

* At the height of their popularity, Jimmy Page had a 14 year old girl friend whom he took out on the road with him (yuck).

* The first several albums, all the electric guitar work was done on a Fender Telecaster that was given to Jimmy by his predecessor in the Yardbirds, Jeff Beck. He later switched to a Gibson Les Paul as his main stage guitar.
